Wessex League Division One

wessex leagueBorn out of an initiative in 1986 with the aim of bridging the gap between county level football and the semi-professional Southern League, the Wessex Football League Division One serves at the prestigious Step 6 level in southern England, acting as a vital gateway for clubs Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.  It sits below the Wessex League Premier Division at Step 5.

Prior to its inception, ambitious clubs that were based in Hampshire often experienced astronomical travel costs to places in the counties of Kent and Sussex, just so they could compete at a higher level.

Beginning with 17 clubs, the founding members are AFC Totton, Bashley, Eastleigh and Havant Town.

Despite the league post-dating both World War I and World War II, its member clubs carry such history. United Services Portsmouth (founded in 1962, though with roots embedded in the Royal Navy’s Victorian era football) and Newport (IOW) are a representation of the deep military and island heritage of the region.

The Isle of Wight serves as an interesting logistical challenge for clubs coming both from and to the mainland (via ferry), with matches played on the island often being some of the most atmospheric, making for a great ‘away day’ for travelling fans.

Interestingly, this has been one of the most productive breeding grounds and can claim some notable alumni.

Arguably, one of the most high-profile, is Charlie Austin who started his footballing journey at Poole Town, prior to his move to Swindon Town and eventually the Premier League with QPR and Southampton.

Meanwhile, there is also Matt Tubbs, who is considered to be somewhat of a legendary non-league striker; in fact a goal machine after honing his craft at Salisbury City.

Furthermore, Brett Pitman can count the Wessex League Division One as a great CV builder having cut his teeth in the division, before making it big with local professional sides, Bournemouth and Portsmouth, while he also returned to AFC Portchester in the twilight years of his career, proving the division is still a draw for veterans.

Despite attendances in the division often averaging at around 120, local derby games are still a considerable pull for fans, with these usually attracting significantly higher numbers. Indeed, a 2024 Boxing Day derby between Newport (IOW) and Cowes Vics, brought 658 fans through the gates, full of festive cheer.

The league has also enjoyed considerable commercial stability over the decades. Most notably, Sydenhams (construction merchants), sponsored the league for a staggering 18 years, while Jewson claimed a 13 year association which has provided significant backing and assisted with running and administrative costs.

Between 1987 and 1989. Bashley won the league three times in a row before they moved up to the Southern League, with this at the time and in the years that followed being cited as the “impossible”.
