Spartan South Midlands League Division One
Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One is the tenth tier of the English football pyramid and Step 6 of the National League System.
The league is the second tier of the Spartan South Midlands Football League system, which contains three divisions plus two reserve divisions.
Above Division One is the Premier Division, and below is Division Two.
The clubs in Division One come from Hertfordshire, northwest Greater London, central Buckinghamshire and southern Bedfordshire.
History of the league
Although the league as a whole was established in 1997 after the merging of the Spartan League and the South Midlands League, Division One as we know it wasn’t established until season 1998/99, as the system had initially contained five separate divisions, with some based on geographic placements of the clubs.
What is now known as Division One was previously the Senior Division in the inaugural campaign. What was once Division One became Division Two in 2001.
Relegation and Promotion
The system of promotion and relegation is slightly more straightforward in Division One than it is in the Premier Division.
While in the top tier, clubs can be promoted to either the Southern Football League Division One Central or the Isthmian League Division One North.
In contrast, clubs that win promotion from Division One then play their football in the Premier Division the following season. There is a second promotion spot available via the play-offs, which involves the teams that finish from second to fifth place in the regular season.
At the other end of the table, the team’s unfortunate enough to suffer relegation drop down into Division Two.
Most Successful Teams
Since its beginning as the Senior Division, Division One has had a nice spread of league champions. In fact, only one club, Holmer Green, has won the Division One title on two occasions.
However, the likes of London Colney and Welwyn Garden City have won both the Division One and Premier Division titles.
