Northern Counties East League Division One
Founded in 1982, the Northern Counties East League (NCEL) Division One is relatively young, compared to many non-league competitions.
Serving as the primary feeder to the NCEL Premier Division, it is one of the most well-supported and competitive semi-professional environments in the North of England.
At first, the league itself experimented with multiple regional tiers (Division One North, South and Central), though eventually in 1991, it settled on a two-division format. As such, it represents the definitive Step 6 destination for clubs from the Central Midlands, West Yorkshire and West Riding systems.
Interestingly, it is one of the most well-supported leagues at this level in the country, with the league regularly seeing attendances of over 5,000 every week across its two divisions.
Indeed, clubs such as Wakefield AFC, Hallam FC and Scarborough Athletic have regularly drawn four figure crowds, while Hallam FC and Sheffield FC (the second oldest and oldest clubs in the world respectively), having both been foundational members of the NCEL.
Things You Need To Know About The League
What may surprise many people is that the NCEL actually has some notable alumni. Former Manchester United winger, Lee Sharpe, famously turned out for Garforth Town in 2004, which attracted considerable crowds as well as media interest, while veteran and ex-Sheffield Wednesday legend Chris Waddle appeared for Hallam FC in the early 2010s.
However, the ultimate dream for young, ambitious NCEL players, though, is one where the odds are so long that they are inconceivable. Though, not impossible.
In what was a fairytale and a case that probably remains the most iconic at this level across England is that of Jamie Vardy, who of course went on to win the Premier League and the FA Cup with Leicester City, helping them to also reach the Champions League quarter finals. Vardy is associated with Stocksbridge Park Steels, before he moved on to various clubs, further up the divisions, before he made it ‘big’ in his late twenties, even going on to play for England.

League Trivia
Curiously, Brigg Town is among a very tiny group of clubs – especially at this level that has won the FA Vase Trophy twice; 1996 and 2003 which helped to cement the NCEL’s reputation firmly as a national power. Meanwhile, their 14-1 scoreline over Teversal in January 2022 was recorded as one of the biggest scorelines ever in modern non-league history.
Over the years, there has also been some key sponsors to the league which have helped with running costs and operational duties. The league’s partnership with Macron ensured that clubs had access quality kits at reasonable rates, while Whitehead’s Fish & Chips are associated with cup competitions.
In what is quite a remarkable achievement, the league’s own website is understood to attract 70,000 unique visitors each month, while an FA Cup tie that involved an NCEL side was once featured live on the BBC via the Red Button, with over 200,000 people tuning in to watch the tie.
