Wessex League Premier Division
The Wessex League Premier Division is an English football league comprising clubs primarily from Hampshire and Dorset, as well as those from nearby counties such as Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, and the Isle of Wight.
The Premier Division is Step 5 of the National League System, and the ninth tier of the English football pyramid overall. The league generally contains 20 clubs, all vying for positions in the division.
Origins of the league

The Wessex League as a whole came into existence ahead of the 1986/87 season after discussions between the national FA and clubs from the Hampshire, Dorset, Berks and Bucks, Sussex and Wiltshire FAs.
The original league consisted of 17 clubs in a single division. The league was expanded to 19 teams for the 1987/88 season. By the 1990/91 season, the league reached its current membership of 20 clubs.
By 2004, the Wessex League absorbed most of the clubs from the feeder league, the Hampshire League, which then formed a new Division Two and Division Three.
Two years later, the divisions were renamed as the Premier Division, Division One, and Division Two. At the end of the 2006–07 season, Division Two was disbanded, and most of the clubs formed a new Hampshire Premier League.
The Wessex Premier Division is a feeder league to either the Southern League or the Isthmian League. As such, teams that win promotion as champions and meet the eligibility requirements are usually promoted to Southern League Division One South or the Isthmian League Division One South Central.
A second promotion spot is available for the team that wins the play-offs, which involves the teams that finish from second to fifth place in the regular season. Once again, this is dependent on the team meeting the higher league’s facility and stadium standards.
Occasionally, additional promotion spots may become available, but this typically occurs when higher leagues are restructuring or expanding.
At the other end of the spectrum, the teams that finish in the bottom two of the table are relegated to the Wessex League Division One.
In certain seasons, additional teams may be relegated based on points-per-game (PPG) assessments across all 16 Step 5 leagues. For instance, during the 2022-23 season, the four teams that finished second from the bottom and had the lowest PPG across these leagues were also relegated.
Teams may avoid relegation if there are not enough teams promoted from Step 6 to fill vacancies in Step 5 or due to geographical adjustments.

Many clubs have been successful in the Wessex Premier Division, claiming the title on multiple occasions.
One of the early success stories from the division was Bashley, who won the title in the division’s first years of existence. Poole Town repeated the feat between 2008 and 2011.
AFC Lymington also won the title on three occasions in the 1990s, including in 1993, 1997 and 1998. Lymington merged with New Milton in 1998, and the new club won the title in 1999 and 2005. Wimborne Town has also claimed the title on three occasions: 1992, 1994, and 2000.
