Northern Counties East League Premier Division

The Northern Counties East League Premier Division is an English football league that is the ninth tier of the English football pyramid, and Step 5 of the National League System.

The division typically comprises between 20 and 22 teams (21 teams competing in season 2025/26) and serves as a feeder league to the Northern Premier League Division One East.

Premier Division Details

Northern Counties East football leagueThe Northern Counties League as a whole came into existence in 1982 after the merging of the Yorkshire League and the Midland League. Initially, the league housed five divisions. However, after many restructurings, the league was reduced to its current form of two divisions in 2018, the Premier Division and Division One, with both containing between 20 and 22 teams.

Promotion has been a part of the league since its inception, with the top two teams in the table after the regular season winning automatic promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One East.

As is always the case, all the clubs promoted from the Premier Division must meet the facility and safety requirements of the higher league, in this case Step 4.

In 2015, the promotion process to the Premier Division underwent slight changes, as play-offs were introduced to allow a third team to win promotion from Division One, joining the top two eligible finishers after the regular league campaign.

At the other end of the Premier Division table, the bottom two teams are usually relegated. These teams are relegated to Division One. Nevertheless, slight variations can occur due to factors such as resignations, mergers, or adjustments made by the Football Association for pyramid restructuring.
