York League Premier Division

York football LeagueA historic cornerstone of football in North Yorkshire, the York League Premier Division was formed in 1897 and is one of the oldest leagues in the country and even predates the city’s professional football club; York City FC.

Formed during the early association football boom in England, it began with nine clubs who were essentially ‘founders’, which included Acomb, Bishopthorpe and Easingwold, while the only club form the first ever season to maintain an effectively unbroken existence was Rowntrees; latterly Nestle Rowntree, which lasted until 2013.

Rowntrees had a major influence on the York League, as did York Railway Institute; both of these being prominent ‘works teams’ with a good standard of football historically; usually setting the standard for teams in the rest of the league.

During both World Wars, the league was suspended, though started again in 1919 and 1946, playing a vital role in post-war community rebuilding.

Meanwhile, the Premier Division sits at the Feeder League level of the English Football Pyramid, while it is affiliated to the North Riding County FA, which provides administrative governance. Acting as a direct feeder league to the Northern Counties East League at Step 6, promoted clubs are required to comply with the necessary ground grading criteria.

In addition, the league structure is considerable, usually containing four divisions for first teams and three for reserve teams, while the Premier Division is highly competitive with a multitude of different years each year winning; it is very rare a club retains the title and, to be able to comply with ground grading standards needed to play at a higher level.

Meanwhile, Pickering Town played in the York League until 1972, prior to their rise up the pyramid and Knaresborough Town are another club that used the league as a springboard to the Northern Counties East League.

Having been a consistent force since the 1930s, Dringhouses have long been associated with the league and hold numerous records.

The Senior Cup

The York League has a number of cup competitions associated with it that includes The Senior Cup, which is the principal trophy for Premier Division and Division One clubs, while The Junior Cup is played by clubs from Division Two downwards.

In addition to this, The Reserve Cup is dedicated to the league’s considerable reserve divisions.
