The league is a regional feeder league, with successful teams in the Premier division winning promotion to the Northern Counties East League. Only one club is promoted to tier 10.

However, to earn promotion, a club must finish as the top team in the league’s top five at the end of the season and meet entry stadium requirements for the higher level. If none of the teams that finish in the top five of the league meet the requirements, then no team is promoted.

Clubs that are relegated go down from Division Two go into the Doncaster Saturday League, Huddersfield & District League or Wakefield & District League. However, relegation and promotion is relatively rare between the competitions.

Some clubs in higher divisions are allowed reserve team in the Premier Division. However, only three reserve teams are permitted to play in the competition at one time.
