Northern Alliance Premier Division

northern alliance premierLaunched in July 1890, the Northern Alliance Premier Division is one of the oldest non-league, grassroots football leagues in England and has several founder members that include Bishop Auckland, Birtley, Elswick Rangers, Gateshead N.E.R., Rendel, Sunderland ‘A’, and Whitburn.

It also has a considerable amount of prestige to it, which factors in Tom Watson; the league’s first secretary, who would later go on to manage Sunderland and Liverpool to league title triumphs.

Meanwhile, in 1926, the league became the Second Division of the North Eastern League, however, it claimed its independence again in 1935 and went from strength to strength.

However, despite briefly disbanding in 1964 because of low membership figures, the league reinstated again a year later and has remained a key fixture of North East football ever since.

In 1988 came a significant merger, which saw it link with the Northern Amateur League in addition to the Northern Combination League, which in turn created a multi-division format.

Naturally, the league has a considerable number of alumni associated to it, due its long history and this has a significant amount of importance in the local area.

Arguably one of the most famous youth/amateur setups in world football, Wallsend Boys Club has seen the likes’ of legends, Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer (who both played for local top-tier side, Newcastle United), Michael Carrick and Steve Bruce come through its doors, where they helped develop them.

Also, Blythe Spartans (known as FA Cup Giants)  spent their early years (1900s) in this league, prior to moving up, while Newcastle United’s third team/reserves (Newcastle ‘A’), were champions of this league on several occasions during the 1930s and 1950s.

Furthermore, Heaton Stannington are a club that spent a number of decades in this league, before moving up, underlining its status as a quality developmental platform.

Key Events

A player who has become a league icon over the decades is striker Benny Williams who scored an incredible 400 goals in 412 league games for various Alliance League clubs.

In addition, the original Newcastle Blue Star used the Alliance as a launchpad to eventually reach the Northern Premier League prior to their initial folding. The club’s modern iteration did the same in 2023 also.

Interestingly, the Newcastle University first team plays in the Alliance, which is a significant achievement, though despite them becoming champions in the 2017/18 season, had to decline promotion, because of the university structure.

Associated Sponsors To The League

Of course, there have been several sponsors in the league over the decades, which have been fundamental to keeping it going and helping with running and operational costs.

One of these is Bay Plastics; a long-term sponsor, while the governing bodies, which are a big help and lend considerable credibility are the Northumberland FA and the Durham County FA.
