Gloucestershire County League

Founded in 1968, the Gloucestershire County League (GCL) was established in order to bridge the gap between local district leagues and professional/semi-professional tiers and unlike in many counties, the Gloucestershire County League has only one division.

This format means that each clash is a senior match of the highest local standard, with entry requirements often particularly high.

Over the decades, the Gloucestershire County League has been a reliable proving ground for clubs wishing to play at a higher level, including the Hellenic League or Western Leagues.

Historical Insights And New Developments

Over the decades, there have been several clubs that have enjoyed great runs in this league, perhaps, most notably, Almondsbury Greenway who won the league on five occasions between 1976 and 1981. Remarkably, the club also reached the FA Vase Final in 1979, enjoying a trip to Wembley while still playing at this level.

Prior to this, Cadbury Health Dynasty won the league four seasons in a row between 1970 and 1974, while during the 1990s and 2000s, there was a Bristol-based dominance, with Old Georgians, Highridge United, and Roman Glass St George enjoying substantial success, highlighting the strength of the Bristol catchment area.

Successful graduates that have climbed into the Hellenic and Western Leagues over the years include Slimbridge, Brimscombe & Thrupp, Longlevens, and Tuffley Rovers.

Furthermore, the league has also had numerous sponsors and for many years, this included Marcliffe (a plumbing and heating company based in Spate). It is still affectionately known as the Marcliffe Gloucestershire League.

In what has been seen as a big step forward, the league, in line with advancements of the technological age, transitioned to Electronic Matchday Programs, which allows fans to scan the barcode app on their phone at the gates, allowing them to read the latest team news.
