Essex Alliance Football League

Formed in 2014, the Essex Alliance League (EAL), is the result of a considerable merger between two historic competitions, those being the Ilford & District League and the Essex Business House League.

The former was founded in 1918 immediately following the conclusion of the First World War and it consequently spent nearly a century providing a platform for local players before the 2014 merger.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the FA officially approved the EAL as a Regional Feeder League (formerly Step 7), providing a direct “Senior” pathway for clubs in boroughs like Havering, Barking & Dagenham, and Waltham Forest.

A significant moment in league history occurred in 2022, when DT FC became the first club to earn direct promotion from the EAL Senior Division to the Eastern Counties League Division One South at the Step 6 level. As a result, this proved the league’s legitimacy as a launchpad for ambitious semi-professional clubs and saw interest pique.

Things To Know About The EAL

While the EAL is modern, the Ilford & District League was specifically created to celebrate the return of peace and provide an element of fun for returning soldiers who had experienced the horrors of war.

Because of this, the league is celebrated for its substantial cultural diversity, and is a representation of the vibrant communities of East London. Consequently, clubs such as Jolof Sports and FC Baresi have become symbols of community pride.

Meanwhile, the league is also known for high-scoring affairs; one such occasion being in 2022, when DT FC recorded several double-digit victories during their run to the title, which was an illustration of the attacking quality on show at the top of the division.

Furthermore, the league also boasts notable alumni, perhaps the most notable of which, being Brian Stein; the former England international and Luton Town legend played for Newmont Travel FC in the league’s predecessor

In addition, there is also Ken Charlery; the St Lucia international and prolific EFL striker for Barnet and Peterborough honed his craft with Caribbean International FC. Meanwhile, the league has also been a hotbed for talent who often get scouted by more notable non-league clubs in the Isthmian and National Leagues.

The principal knockout competition for the league is The Fenton Cup, which is so named in honour of a legendary local football figure, with this being one of the prestigious grassroots cup trophies in East London.
