Dorset Premier League
The Dorset Premier League is a football league based in the English county of Dorset, which is a feeder league, formerly Step 7, of the National League System and 11th place on the English football pyramid overall.
The Premier League is a feeder league to the Western League, the Wessex League and the South West Peninsula League.
About The Dorset Premier League
The league was established in 1957 as the Dorset Football Combination League after some of the league’s more senior clubs decided to take action due to the interference of some junior or minor clubs in the local area.
In 1991, the Dorset Football Combination League agreed to become the feeder league to the Wessex League, which meant that there was a possible pathway for clubs to progress through the National League System.
The league is now part of the Regional Feeder League of the National League System.
The league saw a change of name for the 2002/03 season, as it became known as the Dorset Premier League. The name change was made as an attempt to reflect the standard of the league better.
In 2010, the league earned FA Charter Standard status, making it just the third league within the FA’s jurisdiction to receive this recognition.
When it comes to promotion, the team that finishes top of the table is eligible for automatic promotion. However, that club needs to meet the requirements of the higher league.
If the team doesn’t fit those requirements, then the team that finishes highest from the league’s top five and fits the requirements is eligible for promotion.
Depending on the space in the higher league, two teams may be promoted to that higher level. Teams are usually promoted to the Wessex League or one of the aforementioned Step 6 leagues.
At the other end of the table, the club that finishes bottom of the table can be relegated to the Dorset Senior League. However, relegation will depend on whether the champions of the Dorset Senior League meet the requirements to join the higher league.
If no club from the lower league’s top-five finishers in the regular season meets that criteria, then the team that finishes bottom retains their place in the Dorset Premier League.
