Bedfordshire County League Premier Division

bedfordshire county leagueFormed in 1904, actually as the Bedfordshire County League, there have actually been many rebrands, most noticeably when it changed to the Bedfordshire District League for much of the 20th century, however in 2009 it returned to its ‘county’ roots.

As opposed to some NLS feeder leagues that are mainly made up of major towns, the BCFL is actually the soul of village football, giving this a somewhat unique selling point for a league at this level. In addition, it also provides a major platform for historic clubs from across the Bedfordshire plains to then be able to compete at a “Senior” level.

Curiously, the league’s headquarters at Wootton Blue Cross represents one of its most historic hubs, a club that has often fluctuated between the professionalised Spartan League and the County League ranks.

About The Bedfordshire County League

Being one of the oldest leagues at this level, it has witnessed considerable events and changes, perhaps, none more so than during the war years.

As a result of this, the league was forced to suspend play in 1914, with over one million around Great Britain enlisting, 10s of thousands of which being footballers. Upon its much-anticipated return in 1919, the league saw a surge in “Works Teams” from the brickmaking and engineering industries that defined Bedford’s economy at the time.

While official league play was halted from 1939 to 1945, Bedfordshire remained a hub for football. Consequently, it saw local grounds being frequently used by RAF Henlow and RAF Cardington teams. Interestingly, these sides often featured professional guest players from London clubs who were stationed in the county, maintaining a high level of football for the local crowds during the war.

The league has played host to notable alumni over the years, which includes Shefford Town & Campton, with the club’s rise from the BCFL to Step 5 proving to be the modern blueprint for Bedfordshire clubs. As a result, the club is a prime example that a well-run village side could navigate the ground grading hurdles to reach the national pyramid.

In addition, Many youngsters released from Luton Town or Milton Keynes Dons academies use the BCFL Premier Division as a “re-entry” point into senior football, often being scouted by Step 4 and 5 clubs.

The league has also had many different sponsors, which has helped contribute towards the running and administrative costs over the decades, including Britannia. For a long period in the 2000s, the league was sponsored by the Britannia Building Society, which helped fund the modernisation of refereeing and coaching across the county’s junior tiers.
