In what was probably hardly a surprise to many, Morecambe FC have been suspended from the National League after the club failed to meet financial compliance requirements for the 2025/26 season.
It has been somewhat of a decline for the club in recent years, after it was relegated from League Two in May 2025 after 18 years in the English Football League.
Since then, persistent cashflow problems have seen the club fall further into decline, which has included late wage payments, transfer embargoes and ownership instability.
Where this decision has been expedited in recent weeks is essentially due to an almost complete operational collapse of the day-to-day running of the club. Over the last 12 months, the club has faced points deductions for previous financial compliance issues, while the owner, Jason Whittingham was fined £10,000 as well.
Takeover Collapse

Since 2022, the club has essentially been in limbo, following unsuccessful takeover attempts which has seen sale negotiations with a number of parties, including the Panjab Warriors and Jonny Cato consortium among others stall or collapse.
Indeed, board members and fans alike have publicly called for a sale amid concerns over the club’s survival.
What is important to note – is that this is just a suspension, with the club’s first three fixtures of the next football season, against Boston United, Brackley Town and Scunthorpe United merely postponed as a result, until at least the financial situation is resolved.
In what was almost a comical turn of events, TalkSPORT host, divisive, though nonetheless, articulate, businessman and former Crystal Palace owner, Simon Jordan urged an approach from somewhat of a left-field party.
That being from none other than heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury. Jordan recently revealed:
“I spoke to Tyson about this two years ago and he was interested in it, he wanted to do it, or do something like that.”
“He was asking for an insight and ideas in regards to running a football club.”
“But given the fact that Tyson Fury doesn’t even pay his bets to Piers Morgan when he bets a million quid, I doubt that he’s going to put his hand in his pocket to buy a football club.”
How Would Fans React To Fury Being Involved?
Certainly, with this, Morcambe would become the latest lower league club to have a celebrity owner (or at least consortium), following the successful takeover of Welsh club Wrexham by movie star Ryan Reynolds. His investment and ability to draw in other investors in addition to his contacts has seen the club experience three successful promotions and a dramatic turnaround in fortunes.

Should Fury take heed, then this would, no doubt be a great reason for Morcambe fans to get excited and it could well be good for the game for the outspoken former boxer to own a football club. Certainly it would have pundits and fans alike clamming while also potentially bringing many sponsorship opportunities to Morcambe FC.
