In 2015, South Shields FC was playing in the 10th tier of the English football pyramid, until one local man with a dream and a mission bought the club in what has turned into a modern day Roman Abramovich story in non-league football.
New owner, Geoff Thompson immediately moved the club back to its home at Filtrona Park from a ground it was borrowing in Peterlee and implemented a multi-year growth strategy which has since paid dividends.
While most clubs in tiers five and six are semi-professional, South Shields made the radical decision to turn fully professional in 2021, which allowed them to attract Premier League level talent, including Kevin Phillips as manager.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Phillips as first-team manager.

As such, this pivot allowed the club to recruit players who were previously out of reach, giving them a professional environment, plus daytime training and a level of fitness and tactical analysis that overwhelms part-time opponents.
High Class Structure

This professionalism extends to where players eat and train and, utilising the Downhill Hub; a multi-million pound regional sports facility, they have access to 4G pitches, recovery suites and video analysis studios. The ‘sports science’ approach that the club has adopted allows the coaching staff to track player data, such as heart rate levels, with the same accuracy as a Premier League academy.
At the 1st Cloud Arena, every brick that has been laid is with English Football League (EFL) standards in mind. Its capacity of more than 5000, plus modern media facilities makes the ground “promotion-ready” without needing to spend on upgrades.
The heart of the stadium is its £3 million main stand, which replaced a dilapidated terrace and features executive boxes, high-end hospitality suites and the Mariners Park social club which exceeds many League Two stadiums, with these also providing non-matchday income in the form of weddings and corporate hire, thus generating a financial cushion.
Midway through 2025, the ground underwent a restructure to its executive wing, with Lee Picton, the architect of the club’s on-pitch philosophy moving into a sporting director role, with Steve Camm being appointed general manager.
Elite Operation To Match The Ambition

Such is this ambition, that the separation of football strategy and business operations mirrors that of a top European club, which ensures that the club remains stable even if the team encounters a drop in form.
Indeed, this modernisation hasn’t just been limited to the men’s team but, it has also integrated the women’s team as well as its international academy into its core business. By offering scholarships in addition to full time coaching to teenagers, the club has created a conveyor belt of talent; as such reducing the costs of recruitment long term.
In a bid to secure the club’s long term future and with Thompson looking to sell the club due to health reasons, its strategy has moved beyond the original, purely ‘owner-funded’ model, instead developing a commercial focus with emphasis on corporate sponsors and record-breaking hospitality figures.
With over 2,500 people attending each game, support is gradually increasing as the club’s momentum develops. In a region that is populated by Newcastle United and Sunderland fans, South Shields FC has carved out a niche for itself as a ‘trendy’ alternative, while also being many people’s ‘second club’ in the area.
Due to the club being so well structured and unique for its level, the search for a new owner has made national news because investors can literally build on what is a solid infrastructure and aim for the English Football League with absolute confidence.
