It is fair to say that York City FC have had somewhat of a tumultuous last couple of decades, which has seen them essentially yo-yo between leagues. The club’s relegation from the Football League in 2004 after 75 years was met with shock by loyal fans. A year later, the club narrowly avoided another relegation.
A return to League Two in 2012 was a high point in the club’s recent history as they also won the FA Trophy, though they were relegated again in 2016. Things went from bad to worse with the club dropping into the National Conference North a year later. Ironically, this was a bittersweet season, with the club also winning the FA Trophy at Wembley, beating Macclesfield 3-2 five years after their last victory.
It was a struggle to get back up, but over the last couple of years, there could be a case for York fans to be optimistic.
New Ownership Brings Renewed Confidence
The summer of 2023 brought renewed hope, following a 51% takeover of the club by Matt Uggla – backed by his Swedish billionaire mother, Esen Uggla. It heralded a significant statement of intent – it seemed the club weren’t just intent on surviving.
Over the last two years there has been a marked improvement from the club, with the Minstermen perhaps unlucky not to be promoted last season – albeit, via the playoffs eventually.
With a new stadium – albeit the best outside of the National League, plus a squad capable of playing some of the best football in the division, many curious eyes will be on York for next season.
Plenty Of Reasons To Believe

While there will no doubt be some competition, York will be many people’s favourites for promotion, especially with Scunthorpe United and Southend United rebuilding, while there are several other reasons.
In manager Neal Ardley, the club has someone with pedigree and experience getting clubs promoted, including having taken AFC Wimbledon from non-league to League One, while also reaching the National League Play-off Final with Solihull Moors in 2022.
His tactical flexibility has been an asset for York this season while he has also identified the players that are able to play in the systems that he has used. Last season the club played some of the most attractive football in the league – a rare trait for a York side which for so many years has relied on long-ball tactics.
York also have one of the strongest defensive units in the league, with Callum Howe, Will Smith and Adam Crookes all boasting physicality and ball-playing ability.
Should York recruit well this summer and stay injury-free in key positions then they could not only get promoted, but also win the league.
Should they get back into the National League then it will be a case of pushing on. The billions of the Uggla family can obviously be a massive help and in time, we could well see the club replicating Wrexham, who made history with three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship under the new ownership of Hollywood star, Ryan Reynolds.
